In modern networks, a wide variety of network adapters are used: Ethernet cards, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth adapters, Firewire (IEEE 1394) and xDSL adapters, etc. Besides the physical network adapters listed above, Dial-up, VPN, or PPPoE connections use the virtual WAN miniport adapter. CommTraffic monitors one or several network adapters on a computer, captures the network traffic and counts it. You can select the network adapters for monitoring via the Adapters page (Settings => Network => Adapters) and checking the boxes near the corresponding adapter names. We suggest that you use the Network Configuration Wizard to help you correctly select the necessary adapter(s) and configure it for proper traffic monitoring. Your Internet access may be established through one or several ISPs (Internet Service Provider) or, in short, providers. For instance, you may use a dial-up connection to the Best Telecom provider today and the Future Telecom provider tomorrow. CommTraffic tracks the connection name (a provider) that you use to connect to the Internet; therefore, you can view the statistics for every ISP separately. Moreover, it allows you to define different tariffs for each provider as well as different alarms that will alert you about exceeding time or traffic limits. The Provider menu allows you to view statistics for a single or multiple providers simultaneously. Furthermore, all counters and detailed statistics reports refresh and show statistics for the selected provider(s) automatically. This menu does not switch the current Internet connection between the providers; it only affects the traffic statistics being displayed. The program continues to monitor the active connection(s) and record the traffic statistics for the provider that you are currently connected to.
If you would like to display the summary statistics for all providers, please select All menu item (Provider => All). You can configure the program to determine the name of the provider for each network adapter or use one provider at all times. You can also record the traffic statistics under different provider names. Please see the Advanced Network Features chapter of the manual for detailed information on configuring network adapters and providers. |
