Aliases are easy-to-remember, human-readable names that CommTraffic will substitute for a MAC or IP address and port numbers in various program windows where MAC, IP addresses or port numbers are used. This can make traffic statistics easier to recognize and analyze.
CommTraffic has three separate aliases pages: for MAC aliases, IP aliases, and Port Aliases. Click on the Settings => Network item in the side bar or View Tree node, and then on the corresponding Aliases page if you would like to add an alias. The Aliases page has three columns: the first one is for the IP address, MAC address, or port number, the second one is for the alias and the third one is for the comment that is only displayed in the list. Dragging the column header to the desired place will change the sequence of columns. You can hide certain columns by right-clicking on the header of a column and unchecking the entries you need to hide. You can sort the entries by IP/MAC address or port, alias, or comment by clicking on the header of the corresponding column. To add a MAC, IP, or port number alias, click on the Add button. A dialog window will pop up where you can enter the IP or MAC address or port number, add an alias, and type in an optional comment. Alternately, you can click Action => MAC Alias/IP Alias/Port Alias=>Add menu. If you would like to edit an existing alias, select it and click on the Modify button. To delete an alias select it on the Aliases page and click on the Delete Button. Right-clicking on the Aliases page brings up the following menu that is also duplicated in the Actions section of the main menu: Add - launches the new alias dialog window. Modify - allows you to modify the selected entry. Delete - deletes the selected entry. Detect reads the aliases from the Services file (for port numbers only). Copy - copies the selected line, its part, or all entries to the clipboard. Open - allows you to open an aliases file from the disk. CommTraffic can also import aliases files created in CommView that have the .dat extension, please browse to the CommView folder to import the files. Save - saves the listed aliases to the disk in CommTraffic format (.ctals) or CommView format, as well as in HTML, XML, RTF, XLS and text file formats. Print opens the printing dialog window. Options opens a dialog window where you can change the appearance of the Aliases page. Please note that aliases are used throughout the program where IP addresses/hostnames, MAC addresses, or port numbers are displayed or entered. Whenever you need to enter an IP address/hostname, MAC address, or port number you may be able to select an alias from the list of aliases stored in the program. |
