One of the program's unique features is its remote monitoring capability. Without it, you would only be able to monitor the network traffic in your LAN segment. However, the remote monitoring feature stretches the use of CommTraffic across a multi-segment network, or even to geographically distant networks. The program comes in two parts: CommTraffic Service and CommTraffic Console. The Service must be installed on every computer that you would like to monitor, and you may use one Console to connect to the remote or local Services, one at a time, to monitor the traffic statistics. The Service menu in the CommTraffic Console Toolbox window is responsible for the Service behavior. It allows you to configure the service parameters; such as the port that the Service is listening on or the passphrase that it would expect when you connect to it. By default, the Service listens on TCP port 4776. In order to establish the connection, you must enter the correct passphrase for the Service on a particular machine. The default passphrase is blank and it is recommended that you change it as soon as the Service is installed and launched. Please note, the connection itself is not encrypted or protected in any way, the passphrase is used to verify the connecting party only. Click Service => Service Options => Set New Port to change the port number, and Service => Service Options => Set New Passphrase to change the passphrase for the service to which the Console is currently connected. The Service menu is also used to establish connections to remote CommTraffic Services. Click Service => Connect, and a window will appear where you need to enter the IP address or the hostname that you are connecting to, the port number, and the passphrase. Please note that you may use Address Book entries for filling out the necessary fields in the Connection window. You just need to choose the corresponding entry from the Address Book drop down list and the IP address/hostname, port, and passphrase fields will be filled out automatically. The remote monitoring functionality is available in the Pro version only. |
